What is a capacitor?
A capacitor is a device that stores electrical energy in an electric field. It is composed of two conductors separated by an insulating material called a dielectric. The conductors can be of any shape but are usually plates or sheets of metal. The dielectric can be any insulating material but is usually plastic or glass.
The capacitor is used to store charge. When a voltage is applied across the conductors, an electric field is created in the dielectric. This field stores energy. The amount of energy that can be stored in the capacitor is proportional to the surface area of the conductor plates and the thickness of the dielectric.
The different types of capacitors
- Electrolytic Capacitors
Electrolytic capacitors are made with two thin metal plates separated by an electrolyte solution. They are used in high-voltage applications where they can store a large amount of energy.
- Ceramic Capacitors
Ceramic capacitors are made with two layers of ceramic material separated by a thin layer of metal. They are used in low-voltage applications and can be surface-mounted on printed circuit boards.
- Film Capacitors
Film capacitors are made with two layers of film separated by a thin layer of metal. They are used in high-frequency applications and can have a very low leakage current. The common types are AC-Filter capacitor and metallized polyester film capacitor.
